Janet Vasanthi Chelliah

She/Her

My name is Dr Janet Chelliah, I am a carer to my daughter Kirsty who has had leukaemia twice. She is currently 5 years in remission after receiving Car T treatment. I also live with my husband and teenage daughter.

I am eager to utilise our experiences to enhance various aspects of care and support for children and young people, particularly those with learning disabilities. As a General Practitioner for over 25 years , who has unfortunately experienced the NHS as a service user, I bring a unique dual perspective to this endeavour.

My involvement at Hallam University as an expert by experience has allowed me to assist nursing students in comprehending the significant challenges we face throughout this arduous journey. By sharing our family's story, I hope to influence and improve care on a broader scale.

Moreover, I am committed to advocating for my daughter and ensuring that our experiences contribute to shaping better care and support for all children and young people, especially those with learning disabilities.

I have a particular interest in recognising the short and long term effects of cancer in a young person or child, focusing particularly on mental health and early intervention. I recognise in treating the family unit too, especially young siblings.
